Figure 1: Boxplots of CAD, CAR and plasma HIV-1 RNA in patients at 7-8 years of age who were initiated on cART before or after 2 months of age Conclusions: This study, in a South African cohort of children, is the first to show that early cART (<2 months of age) compared to later initiation is associated with significant reductions in HIV-infected cells and cell-associated HIV-1 RNA transcripts in blood. Whether reduced HIV-1 persistence from early cART improves responses to curative interventions is unknown and warrants investigation.
